Airstrike V1 – The First Step Toward the Airstrike MK2

Every product has a beginning, and this is where the Airstrike MK2 story started.

Released through TACO Tuesday, the Airstrike V1 represents the very first prototype in the development journey that ultimately led to the production Airstrike MK2. Built to explore the concept of combining a protective hard-shell carry platform with the mobility of a backpack and roller system, this prototype became the foundation upon which future Airstrike designs were refined.

What makes this particular piece especially unique is its color. This is the only grey Airstrike prototype ever produced. While the Airstrike program would eventually move into production as the Airstrike MK2, the grey colorway was abandoned during development, with all retail production units ultimately manufactured in black. As a result, this prototype remains a true one-of-one archive piece that captures a path the design process considered—but never brought to market.

Like many early prototypes, the Airstrike V1 helped identify refinements that would later be incorporated into the production MK2. One notable change was lengthening the shoulder straps to improve fit and comfort across a wider range of users. Additional refinements to the carry system, fit, and usability followed as the design matured into the final retail product. Even so, we still have a soft spot for this original version, as it represents the earliest expression of the Airstrike concept before the final production decisions were made.
